Super Natural Yarn

Super Natural Yarn

October 19, 2015

Since early 2000’s I was involved in the wool industry at WRONZ, (Wool Research Organization of New Zealand).  As there technical expert for Dyeing and Finishing I was also involved in a number of projects.  Such as the first machine washable wool business shirt.   Non-Woven Red Cross blackest using bonding of foil.  Sportswool for Icebreaker and Snowy peak SJ piece dyed merino.

So when I was at Lululemon I always wanted to bring wool into the yoga and sweat activities.  But the problem was always around how to create a performance fabric that can handle the easy care requirements of sports clothing.

In the end I managed to work on seamless garments to introduce wool blends.  However the volumes were still small and there was a better way.  So I began to look at yarn technologies I used to use in NZ.  I found an old technology I was using back in 2001 for airplane upholstery, and I started to explore this for apparel.

When I started Won.house and Won-Access I relooked at this technology again and created some amazing fabrics.  As you can see in the photos the cleanliness of the yarn allows for some very interesting characteristics.  We can actually create a supernatural yarn based on the Ring Spinning systems.

The Merino supernatural fabrics are getting great feedback from an international squash player which I think could be an interesting way to prove that wool has the ability to contribute to synthetic fibres to create a whole new class of fabric performance.

I have also created a Tencel version of these supernatural fabrics where we can gain fantastic quick dry, and comfort without sacrificing wash care.  I will be continuing on with these fabrics developments to find the perfect blend of natural and Synthetic to the best performance characteristics for sports apparel.
